Our Thoughts On The Yamaha DBR10

In this review of the Yamaha DBR10 we are going to covering 5 important areas which include key features, what we like, pros and cons, who is this product best suited to and what customers who have bought the speaker are saying about it.

Ready? Let’s get started with this speakers key specfications:

Speaker Size: 10″ – Watts RMS: 325 – Watts Peak: 700 –Dimensions 12.1″ x 19.4″ x 11.4″ – Weight: 23.2 lbs

Key Features

Onboard Mixer – The two-channel onboard mixer has individual dB level controls, and each channel input is compatible with ¼” jacks or XLR, while the second channel can also accommodate RCA. At each input, you can also select between mic and line, depending on your audio source.

High-pass Filter – A prominent feature that you will also find with the Yamaha DBR10 is an adjustable high-pass filter to improve clarity when using the speaker in an outdoor setting. The high-pass filter also allows for use with a subwoofer, and you can select a bass cut-off from either 120Hz or 100Hz.

Dynamic-CONTOUR – One of the DSP settings includes D-CONTOUR control, which employs intelligent sensing to make EQ adjustments and allows you to choose between front of house (FOH), also called the main, and monitor settings. You can also switch off the D-CONTOUR control entirely.

When you use the speaker in a front of house setting, the FOH D-CONTOUR selection is optimized to compensate for low-frequency loss that typically occurs when a speaker is on a stand.

When you use the speaker as a floor monitor, on the other hand, low frequencies may typically come through with a muddy sound. The monitor D-CONTOUR setting takes care of these problematic frequencies. In this setting, high frequencies are also adjusted to improve the vocal range so that vocalists can hear themselves.

FIR-X Tuning – When sound waves from two sources, for example a woofer and tweeter, intermingle with one another, it can affect the original sound wave amplitudes and reduce the overall audio quality.

Finite impulse response (FIR) crossover tuning adjusts the time alignment between the high-frequency and low-frequency drivers. Yamaha’s proprietary FIR-X tuning produces a flat frequency response and smooth phase linearity around the cross-over point between the high and low frequencies.

The result is a clear and high-quality sound.

What We Like

Wide Coverage. – The Yamaha DBR10 has a 90-degree horizontal coverage and a 60-degree vertical coverage, which is exactly the same as the coverage that the DXR10 offers. In an average sized venue, like a wedding chapel that can accommodate 200 people for example, this coverage is more than sufficient.

Output Link System – Another creative feature that we like is the output link system. It features a flexible output connector to link with a subwoofer for additional low-frequency support or with another active loudspeaker to expand your configuration.

If you link another speaker to the output, you can select which of the inputs of your onboard mixer should go to this output.

For example, if you have an instrument in channel one and vocals in channel two, you can have the instrument output through the primary speaker and the microphone through the linked speaker. You can also mix both channels to all outputs.

Value for Money – One of the aspects we like best about this loudspeaker is the overall value that it delivers. This model produces the signature Yamaha sound, but at a much lower price tag. With the DBR10, you have deep lows, crisp highs, and you never have to worry about losing vocals.

The combination of high-end features included in this unit, like the protective circuitry, FIR-X tuning, and onboard two-channel mixer, contribute to its performance, longevity, and reliability.

Pros +
  • Compact and lightweight
  • Reasonable price tag
  • Crisp and clear audio quality
  • Features digital signal processing
  • Onboard two-channel mixer
Cons –
  • No side handles
  • The enclosure doesn’t offer sufficient protection

Who Is This Speaker Best Suited To

There’s no getting around the fact that this model is quite compact and. Although it has an SPL of 129dB, it may not be suitable for large audio-visual productions except as a monitor or floor wedge.

The speaker’s small size is not a drawback, however, and is perfect for the beginner DJ, sound rental company, restaurant, or someone who is looking for the best value for their money.

If you regularly provide sound support for private events such as small weddings, or if you perform in crowded coffee shops, this model will be perfect for you. Because it features a two-channel mixer, the Yamaha DBR10 is especially suitable for minimal setups.

What Customers Are Saying

Quick Setup – The feature that customers liked the most is that it is easy to set up. The speaker has a light weight of 23.2 pounds, a top-carrying handle, and it offers simple connectivity.

Clear Audio – Several reviewers found that this model delivers a satisfactory sound quality, even at a high sound pressure level.

Great Value for Money – In comparison with similar products from the manufacturer, this model has a low price tag, but features nearly the same benefits, including a low-pass filter, FIR-X tuning, and digital signal processing.

Soft Enclosure  – One complaint in the reviews was that the speaker has a thinner plastic enclosure that is less resistant to blows.

The Bottom Line

Would you sacrifice sound quality by choosing the more affordable Yamaha DBR10 instead of the DXR10? Probably not.

This unit from Yamaha may not offer the same mounting options, number of onboard mixer channels, or volume, but it is on par with similar products in terms of quality.

Furthermore, the amplifiers are powerful and reliable. The transducers are durable and perform according to an intelligent circuitry design, and the unit is sleek and attractive in appearance.
