Our Thoughts On The JBL PRX818XLFW

In this review of the JBL PRX818XLFW we are going to covering 5 important areas which include key features, what we like, pros and cons, who is this product best suited to and what customers who have bought the speaker are saying about it.

Ready? Let’s get started with this speakers key specifications:

Speaker Size: 18″ – Watts RMS: N/A – Watts Peak: 1500 –Dimensions 28.5″ x 20.6″ x 27.3″ – Weight: 81 lbs

Key Features

    • Built in Wi-Fi – The JBL PRX818XLFW 18″ has built in Wi-Fi capabilities, which is a fantastic feature from the PRX800W series. This can allow you to control the speaker and your set up from anywhere in the venue. Using the Free PRX connect mobile app that is available for iOS and Android, you will have wireless control over volume levels and an 8-band parametric equalizer. You will have the ability to adjust your sound to optimal levels without even touching any physical knobs or buttons.

    • 1500-watt Class-D Amplifier – This is a class leading amplifier that is sure to give the speaker enough power to fill just about any type of venue size. With this type of amplifier, the bass is able to reach low frequencies and will really be able to make you feel every beat.

    • M20 Threaded Pole Cup – This speaker features an M20 threaded pole cup, which is an ideal size and is compatible with almost any subwoofer speaker poles. This can give you peace of mind that it is going to fit on just about any speaker poles at a venue you might perform at.

    • Reverse Polarity – On the back of the speaker there is the option of a polarity reverse, which can give the speaker further audio optimization depending on the room size and position of the speaker.
Reverse polarity is usually used with a multiple speaker set up. Multiple speaker set ups can sometimes result in a noise-cancelling effect where you cannot hear each individual speaker
while on the same polarity. This option to reverse a speaker’s polarity fixes that problem so you can hear each individual speaker.

What We Like

    • Wireless Control. – We really like that this powered PA speaker can give truly wireless control. I think that having the option to control the speaker while not having to be physically next to it can give you certain freedoms that other non-wireless speakers cannot give. Being able to move to a different angle of the speaker or a different area of the room and be able to hear the sound from that particular angle is great. Also, being able to do this in real time while adjusting from a smart phone or tablet is really useful.

    • Multiple Inputs – The JBL PRX818XLFW 18″ has a great input panel including an XLR 1/4″, RCA Inputs, and even an XLR loop-through. This speaker’s multiple inputs are great for small or big set ups. No need to worry about not having enough inputs to plug in your other speakers or electronic devices.

    • Universal Power Supply – The speaker comes with a universal power supply and can accept any sort of voltage from around the world. This saves you the hassle of buying any power adaptors or being worried that you might damage the speaker whenever you are abroad.

    • Durable Materia – All of the PRX800 series cabinets are made from light-weight plywood which is 18mm thick. The plywood is light-weight but very durable. The grilles are made from 16-gauge steel and the speaker has been thoroughly tested by JBL. This includes transportation on the road to ensure that their PRX800 series speakers have been built to last and will not be damaged when moving them around.

Pros +
  • Powerful 1500-watt Amplifier
  • Wireless and Wi-Fi control
  • Universal Power Supply
  • Multiple Inputs
  • Polarity Reverse Option
Cons –
  • Expensive
  • Not a very user-friendly ap
  • Not that loud without additional amps or equipmen

Who Is This Speaker Best Suited To

Due to the portability of the JBL PRX818XLFW it is suitable for just about any performer. However, the 5000-watt subwoofer is a powerful one which means it would therefore be more of a favorite for DJs and Rock Bands. Not only that, it has multiple inputs available allowing any DJ with multiple pieces of equipment or any rock band with multiple instruments to easily plugin without the worry of available slots.

What Customers Are Saying

The speaker is very powerful. The power of the bass is one of the best they’ve used. One customer plugged it into a 5000-watt amplifier and was able to get the bass to shake the entire stage! This speaker went above their expectations of what kind of sound the speaker was able to produce

Another customer thought the speaker is great, for the most part. The Wi-Fi capabilities are okay, but the app isn’t that easy to use and wishes it was more user-friendly. They like that it is compatible with both iOS and Android, but depending on the venue they are playing at they said they might need to bring their own Wi-Fi router

A third customer also thought that the speaker is great with a powerful bass but feels it should be louder for the advertised 1500 wattage amplifier it features. Maybe it’s possible with enough tweaking the settings and using the PRX Connect app. But they didn’t find the app was easy to work with and feels it should be easier for your average user to use. What they had to end up doing was to hook it up to a louder amplifier and then this gave them the volume that was needed to fill up the large venue hall.

The Bottom Line

This speaker is a very powerful subwoofer and is built by JBL, who have over 70 years in the speaker industry. They have tested the JBL PRX818XLFW 18″ for over 100 hours to ensure it gives reliable performance and able to give consistent high-quality sounds. This subwoofer comes with enough inputs for any other speakers you may have as well as other devices. The wireless and Wi-Fi capabilities can give DJs and other users a new sense of control and sound management that is not possible with a lot of other speakers.
