Bigger and more expensive does not always mean better and we can help you find quality products within your price bracket.

In this article, we will share with you what to look for when buying a PA system and which models we recommend based on your specific needs. Don’t worry if you are new to the field of DJ speakers, the sections on ‘What exactly is a PA System?’ and ‘How to Choose Your PA System’ details everything you need to know

How We Choose The PA Systems On Our List

As you may have realized by now, we are incredibly passionate about DJ equipment. From our own experience with various PA systems, chatting to experts in the field, and extensive research, we have been able to curate a list of what we feel are truly excellent products. Our list will hopefully make the process of finding the best portable PA system for live music or recorded audio, that is reliable and meets your needs, much easier.

Quality

Though using high quality components and materials to make the product are important, we were more focused on sound quality when making this list. Ideally we would like a portable PA system to look and sound good, but if the audio is terrible then the system is of little use.

Marking portable pa speaker checklist

Our team are sticklers when it comes to sound quality. This was the number one feature that determined if a speaker made our list or not. We looked for the best portable PA systems that could give an excellent representation of clear voice and music, while being adjustable to suit personal preferences and room acoustics.

The general rule is that if the components of the speaker cabinet are good quality, the system is likely to produce great sound. In respect of this, every portable PA system on this list has amplifiers, cones, voice coils, and other parts sourced from reputable manufacturers.

Price

Finding a portable PA system that suits your budget can be difficult when you don’t want to compromise on quality. In creating this list we have kept in mind that not all our readers are DJs and some of you are simply looking for a PA system for the school hall or at your café. As such, there are products on the list that sit in the sweet spot of being reasonably priced and suiting various consumer groups.

Versatility

Some speakers on the market are only suitable, for example, for use in the office or at home. Others aren’t rugged enough to be carried from venue to venue frequently, and some are too cumbersome to be carried around easily. Each of these speaker cabinets is suitable for professional DJs as well as novice musicians and karaoke lovers. They are all manufactured from quality robust materials so that moving them around doesn’t pose the threat of damaging components.

How To Choose Your PA System

Whether you are DJing in a club, looking for a reliable PA system for church, or wanting a simple cheap PA system for by the pool, there are several important factors to consider before investing in a sound reinforcement system. Consider first what purpose it will serve – do you need accurate sound at high volumes, or is it more important that your PA system is mobile?

Price is also an important factor to consider, as sound equipment can become exorbitantly expensive. Also, have a look at the equipment you already have to ensure the portable PA system you are thinking about buying can integrate well with your setup. Here are some tips on helping you to find the best portable PA systems.

Venue Size

It goes without saying that the bigger your crowd, the bigger your portable PA system needs to be. If you are unsure whether the PA speakers you have in mind will be loud enough, opt for a slightly more powerful unit.

Keep in mind that the peak power output or wattage rating does not always equate to the loudness of the sound that is produced. Many DJs and musicians will choose a system based on the wattage, but the efficiency of the speakers also has a role to play. If a system has good quality components, such as the voice coil, then fewer watts of power are required to produce clear and loud sound. Look to the peak SPL (sound pressure level) as an indicator of volume capabilities, as SPL reflects the efficiency of the speakers.

Number of Drivers

A driver is another term for speaker or loudspeaker and is the component responsible for converting electrical audio signals into sound waves. If a PA system only has one driver, then that single component is responsible for producing the entire range of frequencies from high pitches to low bass. It is unrealistic to expect any driver to do both ends of the spectrum justice, and therefore two (such as tweeter and main speaker) or three drivers (adding a woofer) is recommended for accurate representation of the music.

Transportability

Though bigger is generally better when it comes to PA systems, it is important to consider the practicalities. If you are constantly moving from venue to venue to play your best live music, then you might want to consider purchasing a lighter PA system. There are even portable speakers with wheels, extendable handles, and built-in rechargeable batteries for easy moving.

Active Speaker vs. Passive Speaker

An active system refers to a PA system where the amplifier is housed within the box, whereas a passive system has no amplifier. There is no clear winner in the contest between an active (powered speakers) and passive speakers (unpowered speakers). What you choose will depend on your personal preference.

Active Speakers are powered, and they will have one or more amplifiers inside the PA system’s box. This makes moving equipment and setup incredibly easy. Also, you don’t have to concern yourself with calculating loads on the speakers. Choose an active system if you want a ‘no mess, no fuss’ solution.

However, if you are moving your equipment from gig to gig and need big sound, then you need larger PA systems. These can become very heavy if the big amps are on-board. Also, the convenience of having the amplifier included in the system can sometimes be outweighed by the difference it makes to the price tag.

A PA system can have one or more amplifiers that are separate entities, often mounted with other equipment on a rack. These are called Unpowered Speakers. It is generally believed that transporting a passive system is more difficult because of the extra parts. However, as mentioned above, an active system can become too heavy to carry by oneself.

An unpowered system can be considerably cheaper, making it a great option for young musicians or DJ’s on a budget. The calculations usually put people off from buying a passive system. If load and total power requirements are not factored in correctly then you run the risk of blowing your speakers. However, the math is simpler than you might think – just ensure that the power output rating of your amp is much higher than that of your speakers. Don’t forget to redo these calculations if you intended to add more speakers to the setup.

To find the best powered system or best PA system to suit your needs, check out some of our reviews.

Built-in Equalizers and Mixers

Equalization refers to the process of adjusting different frequencies. For example, one might choose to increase the low frequencies so that the bass in the music production is accentuated. Mixers are used to combine multiple audio signals into one output signal. PA systems that come with an equalizer, speakers and a mixer require fewer components to be bought, and they allow you to adjust the sound produced by the speakers to suit both a big venue and a small venue.

Extra Bass

The common misconception is to equate subwoofers with blaring bass. Some settings do call for exaggerated bass, such as when playing EDM at a club where a high subwoofer output is imperative. However, when in balance, subwoofers can be hugely beneficial. By adding a subwoofer, there is less pressure for the main speaker to produce these low-end frequencies, allowing it to work more efficiently. Also with the bass well represented, your music can take on a rounder, and often warmer, sound.

Price

If you love music and value good quality sound, it is always tempting to splurge on a superior PA system. Before you start looking, set a budget for yourself so that you don’t overspend. Don’t be seduced by brand names or power output ratings, as neither are an absolute indicator of how well the system will represent your sound. However, there are certain companies that continuously produce high-quality audio equipment.

What You Already Have

Before buying a PA system, look at the equipment that you already have. For example, if you own a decent amplifier then consider rather going for a passive system. Ensure though that your amp will work with the PA system you wish to purchase.

Alternatives

If you are not planning on moving your equipment around much, and you’re looking for speakers to suit a small space such as a recording studio or home theatre, consider purchasing a monitor instead. Monitors are designed to provide a more accurate representation of the sounds you’re producing, and they’re preferred by musicians who need to hear precisely what their music will sound like to an audience. Monitors are also designed for near-field listening, and as such, don’t perform well in larger spaces or when moved around.

What Does PA Stand For?

A PA system is a Public Address system, referring to the amplification of sound for the benefit of a group of people. This term is used for any electronic system that increases the volume or loudness of voices, instruments and other sounds. Nowadays the term ‘PA’ is generally used to describe a specific piece of DJ equipment, namely the speaker system, that is used in your sound setup to play music to small or larger audiences.

What Exactly Is a PA System?

Disambiguation

Different pa systems

There are a few terms used regarding sound systems which can make navigating the world of DJ equipment somewhat confusing. Each of these terms describes a slightly different setup or product that amplifies sound that is either live sound or pre-recorded. However, each product serves a slightly different purpose.

Studio monitors are speakers that reproduce music or speech as accurately as possible at reasonable volumes for shorter periods. The cones (explained later) are exposed (no grills or foam) so as to ensure optimal accuracy and translation of the original sound. You will find them in settings such as recording studios.

Every room and even outside areas reflect sound waves in various ways that alter the original sound. Therefore, whenever a speaker is moved to a new venue, it should be adjusted so that each frequency bracket is in balance with the others.

Studio monitors are less versatile than public address systems as they generally do not have EQ controls, which makes adjusting the live sound production to different acoustics very difficult.

Public Address sound systems usually refer to a unit that can be transported, and its purpose is to play voice or music at loud volumes for many hours at a time. This is the kind of system you would find at a club. They are made of tougher materials and often have extras, such as connectors and speaker stands, to allow for different setups in different locations. The focus of these systems is on producing high volume, but good quality portable public address speakers won’t compromise on fidelity. The best portable PA systems are generally lightweight and constructed of stronger materials.

A PA system can also be used to refer to a Bluetooth PA system, speaker cabinets, concert speakers, portable amplifier speakers, and live sound. There is also a big market for wireless PA systems and Bluetooth PA speakers popular with many musicians and DJs.

A Sound Reinforcement (SR) System generally refers to the type of setup required for really big crowds, such as a live performance at a stadium. Here, microphones, signal processors, amps, speakers, and a powered mixer are used to project voices and music to the crowd.

There is some debate amongst sound experts such as audio engineers as to the exact difference between a PA system and an SR system, and these terms are often used interchangeably.

There is also the category of ‘regular speakers’, small PA systems, other portable sound systems and wireless sound systems that you would purchase to connect with your PC, TV, and smaller portable devices for relaxing by the pool. They can either be designed for quality sound reproduction, high volume, or deep bass. For more information on the best small speakers have a look at some of our reviews.

Who Uses PA Systems?

Musicians wanting a completely accurate playback of their songs would lean towards buying studio monitors for their home, as they want to hear exactly what their music sounds like to others. We call this ‘accurate representation’ or ‘high fidelity.’ However, with so many great quality options on the market, musicians are now often purchasing PA systems as they are a more portable speaker system.

Portable pa system connected to phone

Portable PA systems are designed for DJs at clubs or parties, weddings and at church, who want to play voice or music at much higher volumes in a larger area. You will also find PA speakers being used at schools during larger meetings, sports events and in the cafeteria.

You do not need to be a music expert to benefit from a quality portable PA system, as they are ideal for smaller gatherings and karaoke night, too.

If the environment in which you are using your speaker system changes often, then you would want to purchase a PA system. PA systems are designed with transportation in mind and often have EQ controls so that frequency response levels can be adjusted to suit various acoustics.

Is The Sound Quality Good On a Portable PA System?

Sound Quality

The quality of sound produced by a PA system is determined by a few factors, including the materials used and the design of the unit. A PA system that can recreate sound accurately needs great frequency response, the ability to recreate a wide range of frequencies, or in other words, high and low pitches. The amount of color the speaker adds to the original sound also affects how close to flat the sound will be.

Each speaker will represent different frequencies at different volumes. For example, some are great at producing bass while others focus on the higher frequencies. The less variation you have in volume between the different frequencies will bring you closer to best audio representation.

For a portable PA system to perform at its best, there needs to be a clear signal from the line input and amplifier. If, for example, a poor quality microphone is used, it won’t matter how expensive your portable microphone and speaker are; you won’t hear clear vocals.

One of the main elements that colors the sound is the material used. Each component is carefully selected by the designer, from the speaker cables used to the glue and fastenings, because of their potential to negatively affect sound production. Particular attention is paid to the production of the cones. Cones move in and out to push the air that carries the sound waves outwards, and they will also flex when producing some of the frequencies. This flexing can color or distort the sound that is created. Manufacturers attempt to reduce this flexing by using different materials for the cones, from aluminium to ceramics.

Then we need to look at the housing. An enclosure that is too wide will allow for reverberation of sound waves inside the box, affecting sound quality. Drivers that aren’t firmly held in place can move slightly which creates distortion.

Lastly, for a PA system with more than one driver, there will be a crossover circuit that determines which driver receives which frequencies. A poorly designed crossover will direct frequencies to a driver that is not adept at reproducing those ranges.

Sound quality from a PA system is affected by many elements, but do the add-ons that make it portable interfere with accurate representation?

Sound Quality on a Portable PA System

Consider which elements make a PA system portable. Some systems will have a handle added to make it easier to carry the bulky box. This is often made from non-resonant steel, thus having little impact on sound quality.

However, portable PA systems have grills that can compromise sound quality. A grill is a steel mesh that is fastened over the cones or drivers to protect them when in transit. Though these grills are perforated, there is always some effect on the sound quality as sound waves can reflect off the mesh. For the average listener, this difference is negligible and well worth the marginal sacrifice in performance to ensure the components are protected

We love that you can adjust not only the master volume controls of the mic input, through the mic preamps, but the power output of the mic treble and bass, too. There is an aux input, as well as an audio input for DVD players, so you can play music, movie sound, and karaoke tracks through the Bose L1 Compact. This system is lightweight and compact.

The Best Bluetooth PA System

ION Audio Tailgater IPA77

Bluetooth connectivity is one of the easiest ways to play tracks through your speakers. There are no cables to carry around, and you don’t have the trouble worrying about whether or not there is a correct port for your source. With Bluetooth speakers you can connect a variety of devices from cell phones to laptops and tablets, accessing all your favourite tunes quickly and easily.

We can highly recommend the ION Audio Tailgater IPA77 as the PA system with one of the best Bluetooth capabilities. It was incredibly easy to connect all our devices, whether iOS or Android. What set this product apart was that the Bluetooth was still in range from 30 meters (100 feet) away. Another great feature of the ION Audio Tailgater IPA77 is the power bank that allows for about 50 long hours of wireless listening. With the Bluetooth connectivity and being a battery powered PA system, you can set up a party anywhere with no cables and no fuss.
